Debora Medici-Guetta is an Italian-born, Los Angeles–based contemporary artist whose photographic work explores perspective, identity, memory, and transformation. Working across both traditional photography and her signature hand-woven photographic compositions, she creates images that invite viewers to slow down, look again, and discover new ways of seeing.
Photography is the foundation of Medici-Guetta’s practice. While many of her works remain as single photographic images, others evolve through a distinctive process of cutting, weaving, and reconstructing her own photographs. Rather than treating the photograph as a finished object, she transforms it into a layered visual experience that shifts with movement, light, and perspective. In selected works, the experience extends beyond the image itself, inviting viewers to move around—or even rotate—the artwork, revealing how a simple shift in perspective can transform what we see.
After returning to her artistic practice in 2010, Medici-Guetta developed a distinctive artistic language in which cutting and weaving became more than a technique—they became a physical expression of the idea that reality is rarely experienced from a single point of view.
This exploration gave rise to her acclaimed Landed series and has since expanded to include woven cityscapes, landscapes, portraits, and abstract works inspired by nature, alongside photographic series such as Out of the Shadow and Dreams. Together, these bodies of work ask a single question: How can a shift in perspective alter not only what we see, but also what we understand?
Her work has been exhibited internationally and is held in private collections, earning recognition for its innovative craftsmanship and emotional resonance.

OUT OF THE SHADOW
Every life is shaped by stories we inherit—about who we are, where we belong, and what is possible. Many of these stories are given to us long before we are old enough to question them.
My work begins with a simple invitation:
To look again.
It takes many versions of ourselves to become who we are today. Along the way, many of us lose sight of ourselves—trying to be everything for everyone else until we retreat into our own shadow.
But the shadow is not our enemy. It exists because the light is already present. Rather than something to fear, it invites us to look more deeply and recognize that even our darkest places are shaped by light.
The word photography literally means drawing with light. Through my lens, I have always searched for that light—not only in the world around us, but within ourselves. Every step out of the shadow is a step toward our own light. It rarely happens all at once. With each step, we create space for something that has always been waiting to awaken: our creativity.
Creativity is how we reimagine what we have inherited.
Perspective does not change the past, but it can transform the meaning we give to it.
Stepping out of the shadow is not about denying where we come from. It is about recognizing what has shaped us, choosing what to carry forward, and having the courage to let go of what no longer serves us.
This is the philosophy that guides my work.
We cannot always change the stories we inherit. But we can choose what we carry forward, what we leave behind, and the life we create from this moment on.

BEYOND THE STUDIO
Art does not end at the edge of the frame.
For me, creativity does not end when I leave the studio. It is a way of seeing, connecting, and contributing to the world beyond my artistic practice.
That belief has led me to projects that use storytelling, conversation, and collaboration to inspire meaningful change.
As a member of the Board of Directors of the nonprofit We Do It Together, I support initiatives that harness the power of film, television, and digital media to advance women’s empowerment and amplify underrepresented voices. Through the international I AM campaign in New York, Turin, and Rome, I have joined artists, filmmakers, and changemakers in celebrating the strength, resilience, and creativity of women around the world. These experiences have reinforced my conviction that stories have the power not only to reflect our lives, but also to reshape them.
In 2026, I brought that same philosophy to the TEDx stage with my talk, Out of the Shadow, continuing a conversation that had long existed within my artwork and sharing it with audiences beyond the gallery.
I also believe that some of the most meaningful ideas emerge through genuine conversation. From my Studio City showroom, I host private art salons that bring together artists, collectors, entrepreneurs, and cultural leaders to explore creativity, perception, and personal transformation. These gatherings reflect my belief that art is not only something we experience—it is something that connects us.
Creativity also shapes the way I approach leadership, design, and entrepreneurship. Alongside my artistic practice, I collaborate across creative industries—including as Executive Vice President of multiple art-related companies and a partner in the fashion brand Aya Muse. These experiences remind me that imagination, curiosity, and perspective are just as essential in building organizations as they are in making art.
Whether through photography, public speaking, storytelling, or conversation, I hope my work encourages others to look again, ask new questions, and discover the possibilities that emerge when we choose a different perspective.
In 2010, Debora Medici-Guetta made up her mind to make a new start. She picked up a camera and began the intuitive process of reframing who she was—one image at a time.
It had been nearly a decade since the Italian-born, Los Angeles-based photographer had focused on her own creative practice. Her passion for graphic art, photojournalism, and documentary films had given way to the demands of family and the unexpected ascent of her partner’s career. A return to artmaking meant embarking, in Medici-Guetta’s words, on “a big, long, introspective journey.”
After several years refining her technique and honing her perspective, she revealed a series of photographs aptly titled Out of the Shadow, a haunting body of images that reflected her desire to shed the trappings of the past and position herself fully as an artist in the world. Fittingly, she followed this exhibition with Landed, a series of collages capturing the frenetic yet freeing energy of the world’s great urban centers.
Debuting in Spring 2015, Landedintroduced the distinctive technique Medici-Guetta uses to manipulate photographic prints in unique ways. By cutting and hand-weaving together separate images of the same metropolitan scene, she crafts a heightened sense of space and movement. Reveling in both the chaos and the calm of these transformed moments, Landed established Medici-Guetta as a vital witness to the madness and beauty of contemporary life.
As her vision expanded, so did her commitment to impact. She began working with—and eventually joined the board of directors of—We Do It Together (WDIT), the nonprofit dedicated to producing films, documentaries, television, and new media that advance women’s empowerment. From 2022 to the present, Medici-Guetta has been actively involved in the organization’s I AM campaign, with initiatives spanning New York, Turin, and Rome, Italy. For International Women’s Day, she also served as honorary set photographer and producer for the documentary One of Us, sponsored by the Consulate General of Italy in Los Angeles and the Italian Embassy in Washington.
Following the successful presentation of her Landedexhibition in 2021, Medici-Guetta has continued to evolve her practice and expand her international presence. Today, she presents her work privately from her Studio City, California studio, where she hosts curated art salons for collectors and invited guests. Recent highlights include an exhibition at Alley Gallery in Beverly Hills, California, and the creation of cover artwork for three books published in Italy.
Reflecting on her journey, Medici-Guetta emphasizes that her work now prioritizes emotions over mere moments, focusing on the release and reinterpretation of experience.
“It’s more about feelings now than the experience,” says Medici-Guetta, describing an ever-evolving path in which capturing the moment is perhaps less important than releasing it from its cage.
